Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr. Elske Ammenwerth studied health informatics at the University of Heidelberg/University of Applied Sciences Heilbronn and obtained her doctorate (Dr.sc.hum.) from the University of Heidelberg in 2001. In 2002, she joined UMIT - University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology as assistant professor and head of the Research Group on Assessment of Health Information Systems. In 2005, she was appointed full professor for health informatics at UMIT where she since then heads the Institute of Medical Informatics.

Her research comprises medication safety, CPOE systems, electronic health records and patient portals, management of hospital information systems, evaluation of IT in health care and evidence-based health informatics. She is founder and chair of the Working Group on Assessment of Health Information Systems of EFMI (European Federation for Health Informatics). She is co-chairing the Austrian Health Informatics Working Group (AK-MI). Between 2008 and 2016, she was organizer of the annual Austrian eHealth Conference in Vienna (see http://www.ehealthsummit.at). In 2015 and in 2017, she organized the scientific conference ENI, focussing on IT usage in nursing and social care. She is IMIA and EFMI representative of Austria. For her contribution to evidence-based health informatics, she received the German David-Sackett-Price. In 2011, she was appointed International Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI). In 2017, she was electing as founding member of the International Academy of Health Science Informatics (IAHSI). She was keynote speaker at large conference such as Medical Informatics Europe, Ascendio and ehealth summit swiss.

Elske Ammenwerth published over 120 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. She published or edited more than 25 books and proceedings on health informatics. Since 2005, she was member of the program committees of more than 100 scientific workshops and conferences in health informatics. She is member of the Editorial Boards of Methods of Information in Medicine, International Journal of Medical Informatics, Applied Clinical Informatics and Journal of Biomedical Informatics and serves as reviewer for more several other health informatics journals, among these JAMIA and JMIR.

Together with her team, she received the eLearning Award 2018 in the category "social learning" as well as the Mantas’ Prize 2018 for Best Paper on Education in Biomedical and Health Informatics for their work on innovative instructional designs for online-based learning scenarios. At the moment, Elske Ammenwerth pursues a three-years Master in Educational Technology (MET) program at the University of British Columbia to further improve the learning experience of her online students.
